Modeling harmony biases in learning exceptions to vowel harmony

چکیده
Artificial language learning experiments typically show non-categorical results after training on categorical data. This is generally due to incomplete learning, but these can also reveal biases. One example that participants trained a vowel harmony with alternating and non-alternating affixes prefer the affix in harmonic contexts (Finley 2021). In this paper, I (i) preference for items replicates remote (online) data collection, (ii) effect be modeled MaxEnt Harmonic Grammar. Grammar, score of each candidate determines its grammaticality, probability surfacing. Because satisfy have higher scores than violate harmony, candidates will more likely surface disharmonic candidates, even when both types at levels greater expected by chance. The theoretical methodological implications are discussed

Learning Vowel Harmony
It is possible to construct an unsupervised learning system for vowel harmony, which makes accessible general-isations. Furthermore, such a learning system can be constructed with little built-in knowledge, and, consequently, be applicable to data from a wide range of domains. This paper presents a learning system which fulllls these criteria, and examines the results of applying an implementat...
متن کاملAnalytic Biases for Vowel Harmony Languages
One of the major goals of generative linguistics is to produce a theory of language that can generate all possible languages without predicting languages that are unnatural in that they lie outside the scope of the human capacity to learn. In order to achieve this goal, the nature of language must be understood with regard to the distinction between linguistic patterns that are outside the rang...
متن کاملVowel harmony in Jingulu
Jingulu, a language of North-Central Australia, exhibits a pattern of regressive vowel harmony which is not only difficult to characterise accurately in descriptive terms, but also poses challenges for current theories of vowel harmony. The purpose of this article is thus threefold: to describe a fascinating phonological phenomenon, to formulate accurate generalisations which capture the phenom...
متن کاملVowel Harmony as a Distributional Learning Problem
Vowel harmony is a class of phonotactic restrictions in which vowels in a language are divided into two or more subclasses, and words must contain only vowels from only one such subclass regardless of intervening consonants. Languages worldwide (Turkish, Finnish, Mongolian, Warlpiri, but not English) exhibit vowel harmony. The opacity of such potentially long distance alternations poses a chall...
متن کاملVerifying Vowel Harmony Typologies
This paper applies finite state technologies to verify the typological validity of Turbid Spreading, a theory of vowel harmony in Optimality Theory (OT) (Prince & Smolensky, 1993/2004). Previous analyses of vowel harmony in OT have been prone to typological inconsistencies, predicting grammars that do not occur in natural language (Wilson, 2003). However, attempts to eliminate typological patho...
